Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of peripheral nerve injury in rotator cuff tear and the association between the history of trauma , the size of the cuff tear, muscle atrophy and peripheral nerve injuryTwenty-nine patients with the diagnosis of rotator cuff tear, were included. Electrodiagnostic testing, including nerve conduction studies and needle examination, was evaluated on all patients. There were 12 abnormal electrodiagnostic tests. The most common diagnosis was brachial plexus injury severely affecting upper trunk(9/12), followed axillary nerve(2/12) and suprascapular nerve injury(1/12). The prevalence of associated peripheral nerve injury was found to be 41%. Seven cases among them had trauma history. In cases with a history of trauma, there was able to show a statistically significant association between trauma and nerve injury. But, there were no significant differences on the size of the cuff tear and muscle atrophy with nerve injury. We found high prevalence(41%) of associated nerve injury in rotator cuff tear. So early and careful electrodiagnostic examination in patients with rotator cuff tear are recommended.
